Can I claim medical expenses on my tax return?

Yes.

A list of acceptable medical expenses that can be claimed can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency’s website here.

An acceptable receipt must show all of the following:

  • the patient’s name

  • a description of the service or device provided

  • the amount and date of payment for the service or device provided

  • the name of the person who made the payment

  • the name of the controlled drug, preparation, substance, or the drug identification (DIN) if sending a pharmacy statement

  • the name of the medical practitioner who prescribed the service or device

It is not uncommon for the Canada Revenue Agency to do a review of medical expenses claimed. To facilitate this, we keep your medical receipts on file so that they can be quickly provided, if needed.
