Can I claim medical expenses on my tax return?
Yes.
A list of acceptable medical expenses that can be claimed can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency’s website here.
An acceptable receipt must show all of the following:
the patient’s name
a description of the service or device provided
the amount and date of payment for the service or device provided
the name of the person who made the payment
the name of the controlled drug, preparation, substance, or the drug identification (DIN) if sending a pharmacy statement
the name of the medical practitioner who prescribed the service or device
It is not uncommon for the Canada Revenue Agency to do a review of medical expenses claimed. To facilitate this, we keep your medical receipts on file so that they can be quickly provided, if needed.
